Varkala is a sea side beach resort on the shores of the Arabian Sea in South Kerala. Located at a distance of 51 km from Trivandrum, Varkala boasts of having one of the most calm and serene beaches in Kerala.
The beach also known as the Papanasam beach, is a major tourist attraction among both tourists and devotees alike as it is believed that a bath in the waters of the beach is sure to rid one off al mortal sins. Varkala is the only beach tourist destination in Kerala where one can see cliffs adjacent to the sea shore and there are several water sprouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs.
Janardana Swamy temple
The Janardana Swamy temple built over 2000 years ago and located close to the beach is one of the most famous temples in southern India. It is referred to as the Dakshina Kashi. One of the attractions of the temple is a bell donated by a Dutch captain who felt that the deity saved the lives of the entire crew even though their ship had a watery end..
The Sivagiri Mutt is one of the most important landmarks in Varkala. The mutt is home to the mortal remains of Sree Narayana Guru the great social reformers from Kerala and is one of the important pilgrim centers in Kerala.
Varkala Tunnel, though no more in use today, is one of the important places of tourist importance. A large number of tourists come to see the now dilapidated tunnel that was part of the TS canal and used extensively during the pre independence era.
The Varkala Beach also called the Papanasam beach is one of the most calm and serene beaches in Kerala. The beach is getting more and more recognition and the number of tourists visiting Varkala beach is increasing annually. Its importance is also due to the belief that the waters near the Papanasam beach are sacred and a dip in the waters will wash away all sins. The beach is also known for the Vavu Bali, a Hindu sacred rite performed by the devout Hindus.
Thiruvambadi beach is also another famous beach in Varkala close to the ancient palace. The famous Kuttikkar Shastamyila temple is also located close by.
