Kannur also known as Cannanore, is a city in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. This is the administrative headquarters of the District of Kannur. During British rule in India, Kannur was known by its Portuguese name Cannanore, which is still in fairly common usage. This is the largest city of North Malabar region. Kannur Municipality was established in 1867 and is one of the oldest municipalities in Kerala.

St. Angelos Fort
Most of the forts in Kerala are contributions of foreign rulers. The Portuguese invaders built St. Angelo’s Fort in 1505. Now an archaeological monument, this fort changed many hands and at last came into the hands of the British rulers by 1790. This fort is also known as Kannur Fort since it is a prominent fort with massive walls and a deep moat.
Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
Aralam, full of dense forests with tropical evergreen and semi evergreen vegetation is just 60 kms away from Kannur. This Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1984 and accommodates 55 square kilometers. A visit to the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary will also give you a chance to visit a Central State farm, just adjacent to the sanctuary.
The Pythal Mala, located 4500ft above sea level, is a scenic cliff and a site of diverse flora. This destination is shaped into a hill resort now. If one wants to reach the top of the hill he has to make a 6 hour long trek to reach this place.
Gundert Bungalow located 20 kms away from Kannur city.It was the residence of the famous German missionary Herman Gundert, the author of the first Malayalam dictionary. As a mark of respect to this distinguished scholar the authorities have preserved the paraphernalia and the bungalow intact. Now this bungalow is the site of the Nettur Technical Training Foundation, an endeavor by the Swiss Foundation.
Muzhappilangad beach (15 kms away from Kannur) is a paradise for swimmers and provides an enchanting ambience. This is the only drive in beach in Kerala and it provides a distant view of the Green Island or the Dharmadam Island.
